North Star welcomes residents of Darlington Housing Association - Find out more
North Star is a not for profit housing association operating across the North East with a base in Stockton and Barnard Castle.
North Star has been building new homes for well over 40 years and has ambitions to build 500 new homes by 2023 to help resolve the housing crisis. These homes will be for families and single and older people.
This high quality £3.2m development provides 25 new homes in West Auckland, County Durham and regenerates a site that had been neglected for some time.
The scheme was supported by a Homes England grant of £975, 000 and has been constructed through our contractors Gus Robinson Developments of Hartlepool.
Angela Lockwood, North Star’s Chief Executive, said “We are committed to building high quality, affordable rented housing for local people. This scheme will be managed from our base in Barnard Castle and has been built to exceptionally high design and energy efficiency standards. This is another excellent development in County Durham an important growth area for North Star”.
Steve Bell, Managing Director for Gus Robinsons, said, “The whole of Gus Robinson Team are proud of this development, and of the continued relationship we have built up with North Star. Since 2014 we have worked together to design and build almost 100 new homes for North Star, and the West Auckland development represents one of the finest we have worked in partnership to deliver.”
The new homes have been developed on a brownfield site that was previously a nursing home that had fallen into dereliction. It was negatively impacting on the Conservation Area of East Green. Not only does the development provide great housing, but it also regenerates the area.
Helen Goodman, Parliamentary Candidate attended the event to mark the handover of the new homes to tenants. Helen said, “It was wonderful to welcome tenants to their new homes today. I first met with North Star and suggested this site a few years ago, and have been following the build with enthusiasm since. Affordable bungalows are always in demand locally, and it is brilliant to see them built alongside family homes”.
