North Star welcomes residents of Darlington Housing Association - Find out more
At North Star, we are committed to providing excellent apprenticeship opportunities that equip people with vital skills for securing good quality employment.
Kath McGough, North Star’s Director of People, says:
“We know North Star is a great first choice for apprentices because that’s what our previous apprentices have told us. We ask our apprentices to take accountability in their role, and in return, we give them the freedom to be creative and dynamic and contribute to making a difference in people’s lives.
We encourage difference because we value diversity of thought. Most of our apprentices have explored the wide range of services across housing during their time with us, but it’s okay to stay in one area. We offer opportunities in the community, marketing, and human resources, and we make sure apprentices always develop transferrable skills.
We have five generations within the workplace right now, and we believe intergenerational learning is vital for our future, so it’s a fab time to join us!
We currently have an exciting apprenticeship opportunity to join our Media and Communications Team as a Level 3 Content Creator apprentice: Content Creator Apprenticeship – Baltic Apprenticeships”
We asked three of our staff to tell us about their apprenticeship experience and what advice they have for anyone considering one:

Why did you choose to complete an apprenticeship?
“I chose an apprenticeship because it offered the perfect blend of hands on experience and structured learning. The opportunity to learn directly from professionals in the field was a major factor in my decision.”
What is great about being an apprentice at North Star?
“Being an apprentice at North Star is incredible because of the supportive learning environment and the variety of experiences on offer. The team genuinely invests in your growth, and you get to work on meaningful projects that make a real impact. Additionally, the culture promotes collaboration and innovation, which keeps every day interesting and engaging.”

Why did you choose to complete your apprenticeship?
“I wanted to widen my knowledge about the workplace as I had only ever been in a classroom environment.”
What do you like about being an apprentice at North Star?
“Apprentices are included in staff training, such as the Oasis Seven Stage Model, giving us knowledge that we will need anywhere. Being able to control my own tasks gives me much-needed independence and makes me more productive.”
What has been your biggest personal achievement throughout your apprenticeship?
“I was on the frontline during the launch of our new housing management system. This has given me the courage to take on responsibility for more tasks. However, I have a fabulous team to guide me when I ask for help.”
How do you think your apprenticeship has enhanced your future career opportunities?
“Apart from lots of new skills, I will have another qualification in a completely new subject which could open doors for me to many jobs in the IT field.”
What top three tips would you give to anyone considering an apprenticeship?
“1. Plan your apprenticeship early on. Ask your tutor about the stages of the apprenticeship so you can prepare for the future.
2. If you need more support or a training plan put in place, never be scared to ask for more.
3. Ensure the tasks you are doing daily are keeping you at the level and stage you are at in your apprenticeship.”
